"So this BitCoin thingy, what can you actually do with it" I keep being asked.
"A thingy" I reply, "BitCoin is the digital currency for the digital age, It will revolutionise the way we think about and manage our money" I say and then notice their eyes glazing over and quickly realise I have to do something, dramatic and quick...
more talk about crypto currencies will have to wait.
I then ask them if they enjoy a beer, to which they inevitably perk up thinking a trip to the local pub is in order, but I soon disappoint them by opening my browser and clicking on a link, "Look " I say, "This is MIchael Parsons buying a pint using BitCoins in a top London pub".
And then we do saunter off to the pub, Jackets pulled in tight against the weather, hearing muted mutterings "...but what good is a BitCoin if you can only buy a pint with it... "
Here are a few more pubs that have started to accept Bitcoin since my post.
ReplyDeleteThe Individual Pubs Ltd has decided to embrace Bitcoin in five of its pubs:
the Coalheavers Arms in Peterborough, the Pembury Tavern in East London This pub is featured in the video above, the White Lion in Norwich, the Devonshire Arms in Cambridge and the Haymakers, also in Cambridge.
Individual Pubs owner Stephen Early does not describe himself as a bitcoin evangelist, but he believes the digital currency has a lot of potential and it allows business owners to offer services that are out of reach of traditional credit cards. Unsurprisingly he is a former computer scientist from the University of Cambridge.
Next the Craft Beer Social Club is a roving pop-up pub stocked with British beer and hearty burgers.
ReplyDeleteThe pop-up is run by Justina Cruickshank, who began the business after getting bored with the limited range of beers that you find in normal pubs. But beer isn’t the only thing on her mind: she wants bitcoin to be more widely adopted and has ideas about how to make it easier for businesses to use.
“The next thing for bitcoin is having an app that checks you into bitcoin businesses so you don’t even have to send to a wallet or scan a QR code,” she says.
